A homeowner in West Hartford types “how much does it cost to pressure wash a house in CT” and gets an AI-written answer before any website appears. The same afternoon, her neighbor types “pressure washing near me” and gets the map pack: three local companies, reviews, phone numbers, same as always.
Both of those things are true at once, and that is the whole story of how AI Overviews are changing home service search. Research questions now get answered by AI. Hiring searches still show local businesses. Everything else you have read is a variation on that split, usually missing half of it.
We manage Google visibility for home service companies from our office in Hartford, so we watch this from the ground, not from headlines. Here are the real numbers from the major 2025 and 2026 studies, what we see with our own Hartford area client, and the short list of moves that still drive calls.
Are AI Overviews Taking Over Home Service Searches?
AI Overviews now dominate informational home service searches, like cost and how-to questions, but hiring-intent searches still lead to the map pack. Whitespark found explicitly local queries triggered AI Overviews only 15 percent of the time while the local pack appeared 93 percent of the time. The searches that book jobs still show local businesses first.
Hold onto that split, because every scary statistic you have seen lives on one side of it, and your phone lives on the other.
What the Data Actually Says About AI Overviews and Clicks
Five serious studies have measured this. Here is what each one found, what it measured, and what it means for a Connecticut home service owner.

How Often AI Overviews Appear (and for Which Searches)
| Query type | AI Overview rate | Source |
| Explicitly local (“plumbers in Phoenix”) | 15% | Whitespark, May 2025 |
| Local pack shown on those same queries | 93% | Whitespark, May 2025 |
| Informational questions | 92% | Whitespark, May 2025 |
| Hybrid cost-plus-city queries | 97% | Whitespark, May 2025 |
| Informational (enterprise dataset) | 36% | Seer Interactive, April 2026 |
| Transactional (enterprise dataset) | 5% | Seer Interactive, April 2026 |
The Whitespark local search study tested 540 queries across six industries in three US metros in May 2025. Seer Interactive’s April 2026 study covered 53 brands, 5.47 million queries and 2.43 billion impressions, and found question-format queries triggered AI Overviews 85.9 percent of the time and comparison queries 95.4 percent.
One number needs a flag: Seer also measured near me queries triggering AI Overviews 76.9 percent of the time in their set, which sounds like it contradicts Whitespark’s 15 percent. It does not. The two studies measured different query pools, enterprise informational-heavy traffic versus explicit local service searches. Reading what a study measured before quoting its number is half of understanding AI statistics, which is why we keep doing it below.
How Much Clicks Drop When an AI Overview Shows
The Ahrefs 2026 update, across 300,000 keywords comparing December 2023 to December 2025, found the number 1 ranking page gets a 58 percent lower clickthrough rate when an AI Overview is present, worse than the 34.5 percent gap they measured in April 2025. Position 2 was down 50.8 percent, easing to 19.4 percent by position 10.
Pew Research Center’s 2025 study of real user behavior found people clicked a traditional result on only 8 percent of visits where an AI summary appeared, versus 15 percent without one, and clicked a link inside the summary itself only about 1 percent of the time.
Now the context that almost everyone quoting these numbers drops. These are largely informational, desktop, ranking-page measurements. They measure lost clicks on articles and research pages. They do not measure phone calls, map pack taps or booked jobs. Losing blog clicks and losing customers are different events, and the studies above measured the first one.
The Part Almost Nobody Reports: Signs of Stabilization
Here is the finding that does not fit the panic narrative, which is exactly why you have not seen it quoted. Seer Interactive’s early 2026 data shows organic CTR on AI Overview queries recovering from 1.3 percent in December 2025 to 2.4 percent in February 2026, and every segment they tracked beat their own decline projections in early 2026.
Their study also found that being cited inside an AI Overview delivers roughly 120 percent more organic clicks per impression than not being cited. In other words, the AI answer box is not just a click thief; for the businesses it names, it is a click source. The game moved from ranking near the box to being quoted inside it.
What This Means in Plain English for a CT Home Service Owner
Three sentences, no hedging. Blog-style research traffic is genuinely down, and it is not coming back to what it was. Hiring-intent visibility is not gone; it has concentrated into the map pack, your Google Business Profile, and being the business the AI answers mention. Calls, not clicks, were always the point, and the calls still route through local visibility.
One more translation, because the enterprise caveat matters. Seer’s dataset is built on large brands with heavy informational traffic, and Ahrefs measured desktop ranking pages. A five-person Newington crew whose Google presence is a profile, a map pack position and fifteen service pages simply does not have the exposure profile those studies measured. The studies are the weather report; your Search Console and your call log are the ground truth, which is why the 15-minute check later in this article exists.
How Connecticut Homeowners Search for Home Services Now
National studies give the rates. Here is what those rates look like on the ground in Hartford County.
The Three Search Paths a Hartford Area Customer Takes
Path one, informational: “how often should you soft wash a house in Connecticut.” An AI Overview likely answers it, and the homeowner may never click anything. Path two, hiring intent: “house washing Hartford CT” or “pressure washing near me” from a phone in New Britain. The map pack leads, with reviews and a call button. Path three, AI-native: asking ChatGPT or Google AI Mode “who should I hire to wash my house in Newington.”
That third path is no longer fringe. BrightLocal’s Local Consumer Review Survey 2026 found 45 percent of consumers now use ChatGPT or similar tools for local business recommendations. The paths feed each other: the AI research session ends, and the hiring search begins.
Notice what all three paths have in common. Whether the homeowner starts with an AI answer, a map pack or a chatbot recommendation, the decision runs through the same verification step: who is this company, what do their reviews say, can I call them right now. The path changed; the checkpoint did not.
Why the Map Pack Still Owns the Money Searches in CT Towns
Proximity, reviews and a tap-to-call button are a combination no AI paragraph replaces. Backlinko’s analysis found 42 percent of searchers click map pack results on local queries, and BrightLocal’s 2026 survey found 97 percent of consumers read reviews for local businesses.
Connecticut adds a seasonal sharpening: spring house washing demand and fall gutter demand spike hiring-intent searches in compressed windows. When a Glastonbury homeowner needs the deck washed before a graduation party, she is not reading an AI essay. She is calling one of three businesses in the map pack.
What AI Answers Get Wrong About Local CT Businesses
We check AI answers about local companies regularly, and the errors follow a pattern: outdated service areas, defunct businesses still recommended, and generic national pricing that misses Connecticut labor and water costs entirely.
A typical example: ask an AI tool what house washing costs and it will often quote a national range that undershoots what any insured Hartford County company actually charges. A homeowner armed with that number calls three local businesses and thinks all three are overpriced. Publishing your own real Connecticut ranges on your own pages is the antidote, because it gives the machines a better local source to quote.
Do the check for your own business this week. Ask the AI tools who you are and what you charge. What they get wrong traces back to your public data, and fixing the source fixes the answer.

What Still Drives the Phone: The Signals AI and Google Both Trust
The useful news buried in all this data: the map pack and the AI systems read the same signals. One set of work feeds both.
Your Google Business Profile Is Now Your Most Important Page
It powers the map pack that hiring searches resolve to, and its data feeds Gemini and AI Overviews directly. Categories, services, photos, hours, posts: complete beats clever, every time.
Reviews Are the Currency of Both the Map Pack and AI Answers
Ratings and review text drive map pack decisions, and AI systems summarize review content when they describe businesses. A review that says “they soft washed our house in Newington” is doing double duty. Ask for reviews after every job, and reply to all of them.
A Website That Answers Questions Like a Human Expert
Question-first headings, direct answers underneath, real pricing ranges, town names. This is answer engine optimization (AEO) in practice, and it serves featured snippets, AI Overviews and human readers with the same work. We wrote the full playbook in our guide to AEO for local service businesses, and the conceptual comparison in answer engine optimization vs SEO.
Entity Consistency: Being One Clear Business Everywhere
Same name, address, phone and service list across every listing, so both Google and AI tools can verify you are one real business. That identity layer has its own guide: entity SEO for contractors.
What We Saw With Our Own Client While AI Overviews Rolled Out
Studies are one kind of evidence. Watching a real company’s Google presence every week through the rollout is another. Here is ours.
The Ground View From Newington and Hartford
While national headlines announced the death of search, we were managing the Google presence of Mr-Suds Power Washing PROs, our pressure washing client in Newington CT and our own testing ground. Through the same period AI Overviews rolled out, the Newington profile held top 3 map pack positions for 8 of 10 service keywords, number 1 for house washing, soft washing and fence washing, with a 5.0 rating across 39 reviews. Hiring-intent searches kept resolving to the profile, and the profile kept producing conversations.
Where the Calls Actually Come From
The pattern in the accounts we manage is consistent: hiring-intent search, to the map pack, to the profile, to a call or message, captured in the CRM. The searches that AI Overviews absorbed were mostly research questions, the “how often should I” and “what does it cost” queries, which rarely produced direct calls even before AI existed.
That is the reframe worth keeping: AI Overviews mostly took the traffic that was informational browsing, not the traffic that was customers. We say that as an observed pattern, not a measured statistic, and the published studies above are the quantitative backbone.
What We Changed Because of AI Overviews (and What We Did Not)
We did not abandon content. Mr-Suds runs 18 service pages and 15 published articles, and the change was in how they are written: question-first, direct answers up top, written so machines can quote them and humans can act on them. We did double down on Google Business Profile completeness, the review flow, and consistent entity signals across every listing.
And one honest note that teaches more than any win. Hartford, the expansion market one town over, started with zero map pack presence despite the strong Newington profile, and the AI tools reflect that same absence. AI visibility follows local visibility. It does not replace it, and it does not skip ahead of it.
AI changed where research happens. It has not yet changed where Connecticut homeowners hire.

Should Connecticut Home Service Businesses Change Strategy in 2026?
The balanced verdict, based on everything above. Keep the map pack and your Google Business Profile as the core, because the hiring searches still resolve there, and that work is local SEO done properly. Write fewer, better pages that answer real questions with real local figures. Build reviews relentlessly, since they feed both the pack and the AI answers. Check your AI mentions quarterly, the way you would check your rankings.
And one warning: do not pay for “AI placement” schemes. No legitimate product can buy you into AI Overviews, and anyone selling guaranteed AI mentions is selling smoke. The honest version of this work is the same trust-signal building described above; for what it is worth, we bake that AEO layer into our local SEO work for Connecticut home service companies as standard, not as a separate bill.
FAQ: AI Overviews and Home Service Search
Do AI Overviews show up for home service searches?
Yes, but mostly for research questions. Whitespark’s local search study found informational queries triggered AI Overviews 92 percent of the time, while explicitly local hiring queries triggered them only 15 percent of the time and showed the local pack 93 percent of the time.
Are AI Overviews replacing the Google map pack?
No. On hiring-intent searches the map pack still appears almost universally, and it remains where local jobs get booked. AI Overviews absorbed research questions; the map pack kept the money searches. Both can appear on the same page for hybrid queries.
How much do AI Overviews reduce clicks?
Ahrefs measured a 58 percent lower click rate for the top result when an AI Overview appears, and Pew found users click a traditional link on 8 percent of AI-summary visits versus 15 percent without. Both measurements center on informational searches, not hiring searches.
How do I get my business mentioned in AI Overviews?
Nobody can buy or guarantee it. The inputs that correlate with citations are the same trust signals that win local search: a complete Google Business Profile, consistent business information, reviews, and pages that answer specific questions directly. Seer Interactive found cited brands earn roughly 120 percent more clicks.
Does the Google Business Profile still matter in 2026?
More than ever. It powers the map pack that hiring searches still resolve to, and its data feeds the AI systems making recommendations. For a local home service business it is now the single most important page on the internet.
Should contractors stop writing blog content?
No, but change what you write. Generic research posts lost clicks to AI Overviews. Question-first pages with direct answers, real local pricing ranges and first-hand proof still earn snippets, citations and customers. Write fewer, better, more local pages.
Do homeowners trust AI recommendations for hiring contractors?
Increasingly for research: BrightLocal’s 2026 survey found 45 percent of consumers have used AI tools for local business recommendations. But hiring still runs through verification: reviews, ratings and the profile. AI starts more conversations than it closes.
What is AEO and is it different from SEO?
Answer engine optimization means structuring content so search engines and AI systems can quote it: question headings, direct answers, clear facts and consistent business data. It is not a replacement for SEO; it is the same work aimed at both humans and machines.
